Dick Landy's '64 AWB Dodge- Altered by moving the wheels forward by about 6" front, and 8" rear. The precursor to Chrysler's factory altered-wheelbase cars and the beginning of the match-race craze at independent tracks that would eventually morph into the birth of flopper Funny Cars. 26. Sam Barris' '50 Buick Sedanette- considered by most as the perfect custom. 27. Doane Spencer's '32 Roadster- It's as unique, beautiful, and unparalleled today as it was when built. 28. Built in 1955, when seen in 77 Sunset Strip it was the first rod to get national TV exposure, and started more than one fad. 34. Andy's Instant T- Andy Brizio's fiberglass kit T. His own won Oakland's AMBR (America's Most Beautiful Roadster) trophy in 1970. 35. Hemi Versus Buick Shootout Cars- The '70 Hemi GTX and '70 Buick GS455 invoked much passion on both sides of the battle. 36. Ed Roth's Beatnik Bandit- Never copied, it was as inimitable as it was undriveable- the Bandit launched Roth's career as a car and youth culture icon. 37. Larry Watson's '58 Thunderbird- Watson took a new T-bird, a little panel painting, and made magic. 38. Gary Kollofski's '55 Chevy- Rat powered, huge rear tires. 39. Fat Jack's '46 Ford Coupe- Pumpkin orange, with a George Streagle-blown/injected big block, it was one of the first real street-type racing rods. It proved pigs could fly. 40. Scott Sullivan's '55 Chevy- Before the Power Tour, went from Dayton, Ohio, to Palmdale, California, then ran mid-10s with leftover burger wrappers flying out the back windows. 41. Rick Dobbertin's Pontiac J-2000 Pro Fairgrounds- When people called BS on his solid-mounted rearend, Dobbertin answered with a pair of valvesprings for a suspension. 42. C.A.R.S. Inc. Camaros- Rick Dyer, Danny Scott, Bruce Kimmen, Steve Carrier, and Jim Treppa buit the kind of cars the Fastest Street Car Shootout was created forl 43. The So-Cal Streamliner- In 1950 set the Bonneville record of 210.896 mph, it broke the record set in1928 and was home built. 55. Billy Gibbon's Cadzzilla- Nothing short of the factory-built Holden dream car has surpassed it yet. 56. Pete Chapouris' Limefire '32 Roadster-A glass body, with off-the-shelf parts, can drive anywhere, and makes a strond statement. 57. Mickey Thompson's challenger I- Homebrew stremliner ran 406.60 mph, but broke a driveshaft on the return run. Didn't break the record, but it did make a point. 58. Bob McGee's Duece Roadster- Appeared in the October 1948 Hot Rod as high tech. Had hidden hindges, smooth three-piece hood, one-piece rear deck and a c'd rear frame. 59. Smokey Yunick's '66 Nascar Chevelle- the "cheater Chevelle" was singularly responsible for the introduction of the NASCAR body template. 60. The Ala Kart- Debuted in 1958 and wond the Oakland Show big trophy twice. 61. Darryl Starbird's Pedicta- Bubbletopped '57 T-bird launced Starbird into the "King of the Bubbletops". 62. Dennis Varni's '29 Model A Roadster- Same owner since 1971, and a winner of the AMBR trophy. 63. Mooneyham & Sharp's '34 Ford- Take a flathead powered dry lakes racer, add a blown fuel Hemi. Fuel coupes would get faster as the years went on, but never more wicked that the No. 554. 64. & 65. Stone-Woods-Cook's Swindler A And Big John Mazmanian's Willys- Gasser wars of the '60s, immortalized by Revell models; the standard for sharp-looking, hard-running door-slammers. 66. Marcellus & Borsch's '23 Ford AA/Fuel Altered- Wild Willie would run 7s, sideways, with one hand! 67. The Ram Chargers' High and Mighty '49 Plymouth- The Ram Chargers determined that raising the car's center of mass would produce more forward bite. Everyone copied. 68. George Montgomery's '33 Willys- Ohio George Montgomery didn't follow the pack, he lead as the King of Ohio Gassers. 69. Bob Chandler's Big Foot- Began as a promotional stunt and ended up creating the Monster Truck craze. 70. The No. 88 Charger Daytona Mule Car- Forced NASCAR into sanctions against the aero mods that effectively made the Hemi impractical, bringing small-blocks to the big oval. 71.. & 72. Calvin Rice's and Mickey Thompson's Slingshots- First Hemi powered dragsters. In 1954, Thompson was the first single-engined car to run 150 mph; introduced the rollcage and narrowed rearend to rails, while stimulating interest in streamlining. 73. The Futureshock Van- Vans were a part of the '70s, this was a joint project between BFGoodrich, Kenny Youngblood, and the Car Craft Shop. 74. & 75. Pete Chapouris' and Jim Jacobs' '34 Coupes- Led to Pete & Jake's, the California Kid TV movie, and repro chopped coupe bodies. 76. Phil McCool's '32 Roadster- This Orange, blown big-block-powered, mag-wheel-and-slick-shod traditional highboy hot rod first appeared in 1978. 77. Ak Miller's Caballo De Hierro- The Iron Horse. Built for the '53-'54 La Carrera Panamerica based on a '50 Ford chassis, a 394 ci Olds engine, and a '27 Model T body. 78. Don Hardy's V-8 Vega- Stuff a small-block into a Vega and create a business. 79. Kenny Bernstein's 300-mph Top Fuel Dragster- Ran 301.70mph at the '92 Gatornationals and earned Bernstein the title 'King of Speed'> 80. Sadd-Teague-Bentley Roadster- Al Teague race the '29 at Bonneville in'72 and set the record at 258 mph. 81. Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America- In '63 the jet powered streamliner ran 407 mph. 82. Jack Chrisman's '29 Sedan- Heavily chopped, full=fendered, wickedly fast drag sedan with Von Dutch pinstriping and a flying eyeball on the rear. People freaked. 83. Cook & Bedwell/Baney, Fenn & Arnold Dragster- At Lions Dragstrip on February 3, 1957 this was the first drag car to go 166.97 mph on 98% nitro. 84. The Dodge Chargers- Drag Racing's biggest deal ever (reportedly a quarter-million in 1964 dollars). Experimented with the wedge motor before the Hemi was available. 85. Jungle Jim Liberman's Vega Funny Car- The greatest showman drag racing ever had. 86. The Cortopassi Brothers' Glass Slipper- Fiberglass dragster seen in '55, ran 181 mph at Bonneville the same year, and won the Most Beautiful Competition Car trophy at the Grand National Roadster show in '57. 87. Charles Carpenter's '55 Chevy- Word got around in'84 that some kid's old Chevy was running 180s, spewing nitrous, and beating dragsters. First IHRA Top-Sportsman class car to run 7s. 88. Thom Taylor/Greg Fluery Frankenstude- A Studebaker version of Cadzzilla, it took dare to be different to a new level. 89. Jim Lytle's Race Car- A homebuilt hot rod/race car that ran 9.31 ets at 163 mph in '64.'34 Ford severly chopped sedan on '34 rails with an Allison V-12 and a one-piece fiberglass body. 90. Jeff Smith's '65 Chevy Malibu- Magazine editor who showed muscle cars could do more than drag race. Had a push in starting the Pro Touring movement. 91. The Cheap Thrills Dart- In 1994, Hot Rod magazine built a 12 second quarter mile car for less than two grand. 92. Larry Ernst's '51 Chevrolet BelAir- Barris built car for a Catholic priest in Ohio. Helped to spread the lead sled gospel east of the Mississippi. 93. Ron Courtney's X-51 Ford- Ex-shoebox made magazines in '58, and some say the style still works today. 94. Jack Stewart's '50 Oldsmobile- Best known of the Valley Custom sectioning jobs, also known as the Polynesian. 95. Max Balchowsky's Old Yeller I- An assortment of jukyard debris powered by a killer nailhead embarrassed many an expensive European sports car. 96. Rod Saboury's '63 Corvette- Raised the Pro Street bar in the early '80s. 97. Rugirello/Roush Mustang II- Before Cactus Jack became Jack Roush or the Cat in the Hat, he was putting 509 ci mosters into Mustang IIs. The car would run 9.50s when 12s were considered hot. 98. Steve Lisk's Hemi Challenger- In '77 he stuck a Lenco-shifted Hemi into his Challengerl 99. Magan/Williams Golden Thing- A drag boat, but running a Keith Black Hemi. 100. Robert Williams '32 Ford- The Aces and Eights torn-fendered, red-oxide roadster might have been the first rat rod.
